Weather Deck Works | SS Great Britain
Просмотров 1864 месяца назад
The weather deck is the SS Great Britain’s roof. It protects the ship from the elements and acts as a seal to keep water out, maintaining the carefully controlled environment on the inside. The current deck was installed in the 1990s and urgently needs to be replaced. Without this work, water will continue to get in and the 180-year-old wrought iron hull will continue to rust.

What's a Wardian Case?
Просмотров 2835 месяцев назад
Learn about the ingenious 1800s Wardian Case from our Victorian botanist. Wardian Case: [ˈwɔːdɪən keɪs] Victorian glass houses used to transport plants over long distances, often for maritime use. The air-tight design of the Wardian Case created a regulated atmosphere, much like modern day terrariums. This kept the plants within the cases healthy and hydrated, even over long periods of time. .....

The Goat of the Sea for National Poetry Day 2023 - Victorian Poetry
Просмотров 6311 месяцев назад
To celebrate National Poetry Day, we checked in with a slightly disgruntled steerage passenger... The Goat of the Sea is an anonymous poem that was found on board the SS Great Britain in 1854 on a voyage from Melbourne to Liverpool. ‘The Golden Wreck’ by Alexander McKee is a brilliant book which tells the tragedy of the Royal Charter. Alexander McKee was also the man who searched for, and found the wreck of the Mary Rose.

    Back in 1994, I sponsored a plank for the new deck in my eldest son’s name. In January 2024, we visited the SS Great Britain for the first time, and we were touched and moved to see my son’s name in the SS Great Britain Trust book of thanks which is kept in the library. A few months back, I purchased a door wedge made out of the old 1990s deck, and this is very special to me, not only because it’s come off the SS Great Britain - but because of my son’s connection with it. ❤️

    Well, she might have been "scrapped" but on the Falkland Islands she was used as a hulk for storage of coal. And then at some point towed back to England, a very risky business but she survived to tell the tale. I went over her in around 1973 (she was an empty void with temporary planked walkways), but since then she has been "fitted out" and really I must go see her again while I am still able.

    Ticket sales only account for a small portion of the approximately 2.4 million American dollars a year. The government picks up the rest of the tab. Once again hard earned tax payer dollars is shunted away from those in need to those who have it all. Disgusting and pathetic.

    • @kingduckford
      @kingduckford 2 года назад

      Because everyone thinks that overproduction is "good". Never enough sound effects, background music, special effects, drama, awfulness, you name it. The more the better, they reason. No matter how awful, gaudy, over the top, even if it obscures things. If they can shoe horn more garbage in "It'll be more better".
